Connecting People With Parks, Apirana Reserve, Auckland
Our Connecting People with Parks programme is an initiative between CVNZ and the Auckland Council. The programme seeks to welcome biodiversity back to central Auckland and provides an opportunity for people to connect with others, whilst caring for our urban parks. This programme has been operating for the past nine years, and over that time our volunteers have helped us plant well over 30,000 plants and have cleared over 70,000 m2 of weeds! In addition to this, volunteers have helped us tackle a variety of tasks including track maintenance and litter clean ups. Events run from 8:30am to 2:30pm, where Conservation Volunteers travel to a different park within Auckland and undertake a variety of activities. Depending on the time of year, activities may include planting, plant propagation, weed control, and litter clean-ups. Volunteers are led by an experienced team leader, who aims to teach volunteers about all aspects of conservation, including plant and weed identification, planting techniques, native fauna identification and more. Each park has its own unique fauna and flora and the conservation challenges for each area vary, providing volunteers with an opportunity to learn something new each week.
