Weeding and Planting at Tiakina/Sister Rene Shadbolt Park, Auckland

Collaborating with Whau River Catchment Trust, we look forward to hosting you for a weed busting day at Tiakina/Sister Rene Shadbolt Park. Weed busting is equally important in conservation as planting trees – if we don’t look after the trees once they are planted there is an 80% chance they will die due to weeds smothering them! The weeds grow thicker and faster than our native trees so we have to clear them away from the trees and give them lots of light and space again so they can grow nice and strong. Once the trees have matured, they will provide lots of food and habitat for our native birds, insects, and lizards. They will also reduce sediment and excess nutrients reaching the waterways and oceans, both of which have a negative impact on our aquatic species. With your effort to free up the living space and sunshine for the trees, the native vegetation will soon provide shelter and protection along the riverbank, making the place more pleasant for recreation and conservation.
